Book 2: My book # 2 Choice
For my second book choice, I will read Poet Warrior by Joy Harjo. On the surface I chose this book because I always have admired those who participate in multiple contrasting fields much like the name "Poet Warrior." Those two words seem very contradictory. However, it is in that contradiction that I find happiness. I've always been drawn to many very different professions or goals and I felt called to read this book.
On a much deeper note, I was pulled in by this book as it is written by Joy Harjo, a Native American woman. For context, I am part Native American. I know what you're thinking- "There's no way this guy is actually Native American." I've always been met with that response growing up as I grew up in a suburban neighborhood.
While I certainly have lived a privileged life, my Native American roots are a defining part of who I am. My grandmother was born and raised on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin and since she moved from the reservation, she has made sure that all of her children and grandchildren remember where we come from. Because of this, I've always felt a strong connection despite being only a quarter Native American.
This connection also inspires me to promote positive change in reservation life as Native Americans and reservations are some of the most marginalized and forgotten people and places in our country. This has always hurt my heart as I've been able to experience a great life while many of my family haven't been able to experience such things.
With this in mind, I always seem to gravitate towards this sort of topic as I have a yearning to learn more about where I come from no matter how detached I may be from it.
Hi Michael,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing a personal part of your life-- that is SUPER interesting and I would love to learn more about your heritage! I am curious to know what Poet Warrior is about and how Joy was able to promote change in your community.
Thank you,
Zoë
